The Coachella Valley Arabs went to a different level Friday night, wearing completely pink football uniforms for their annual rivalry game against the Indio Rajahs at Ed White Stadium in Indio.
The pink uniforms were not a surprise to Indio High School officials, since the two schools had talked earlier in the day about Coachella Valley wearing pink. But when the Arabs walked onto the field for pregame warmups wearing the pink uniforms, the large Coachella Valley crowd that traveled to the game roared in surprise and appreciation.
&#;I have only heard positive things about them,&#; said Coachella Valley High School athletic director Jacob Van Hofwegen. &#;The players didn&#;t know about them until Friday night as they were getting dressed to leave for Indio, but I&#;m told they freaked out with excitement when it was revealed to them.&#;

When the team hit the field Friday, they faced the cheering crowd and held up a banner with the Coachella Valley High School logo stating &#;Mighty Arabs Tackle Breast Cancer.&#;
Before the game Arabs sophomore quarterback Donny Fitzgerald hinted at the uniform surprise.
&#;They don&#;t know what&#;s coming tonight!!! We&#;re runnin&#; this! #PinkOut&#; Fitzgerald posted on Twitter with emojis including a bell, a nod to the Victory Bell the Coachella Valley and Indio play for.
Christian Hernandez of the Coachella Valley booster club said the pink uniforms were to honor Breast Cancer Awareness month but also to honor a Coachella Valley player from the team who lost his mother to breast cancer. That player has since moved to Texas.
It was booster club funds that bought new uniforms for the football team for . Van Hofwegen said that when there were some minor problems with the new uniforms, manufacturer Battle gave the school the pink uniforms as an added benefit for the school.

The Indio game was not the last time the uniforms will be seen this month, Van Hofwegen said.
&#;We are absolutely going to wear them again,&#; he said. &#;I don&#;t know for sure if we are wearing them this weekend for homecoming, but we will be wearing them on the 26th against Banning.&#;
