When I first signed up for a gym membership, one of the initial thoughts that came to mind was what I was supposed to take to the gym. It wasnt what type of workouts Id be doing or what kind of machines this gym offered, it was, to put it simply, what do I bring with me? If you couldnt tell just yet, Im definitely an overthinker. I stuffed a random tote bag with my keys and wallet and kept it on my person at all times while sheepishly stealing glances at other gym-goers to see what kind of bag they had and what type of items they used from their bag.

After getting used to attending the gym, I found out that (spoiler alert!) it wasnt as big of a deal as I thought it was. I upgraded from a tote bag to a backpack based on what I found I liked to bring with me, and now, I adjust what I bring depending on the days workout routine or whether I have something to do before or after.
However, I still couldnt help but feel like I was missing a few essentials in my bag. So, I tapped our very own Everygirl, Assistant Social Media Editor Abigail Moseman, who also works as a Fitness Instructor at Equinox, for her gym bag essentials. As someone who is in and out of the gym almost every day, there was no better person I could think of for some insight into the best gym bag essentials than her. Before we jump in, Abi staunchly believes that you dont need any of these things to get started in the gym. These are just a few items that have made the practice of working out often easier. At the end of the day, just showing up and moving in a way that feels good to you is the ultimate goal.

When it comes to picking out a gym bag, it truly depends on what youre taking and what time of day youre going. If youre heading to the gym right before or after work, youre probably going to want a larger bag to hold your change of clothes and shoes. If youre heading to the gym from home and can go home right after, a simple belt bag with your keys and wallet will always do the trick.
Abis favorite gym bag right now is the FP Movement Quilted Carryall. It truly is a Mary Poppins bag, I swear theres nothing you cant fit in there. I love that it works in the gym but looks put together enough that I can bring it to work or out and about running errands, Abi said. Before I got it, I was tossing stuff in any Lululemon shopping bag or Trader Joes tote, and while that does work, it wasnt the best system. When shes not using her Quilted Carryall, shes using her sturdy Patagonia backpack. Below, Ive rounded up 15 of the best gym bags you can use no matter what kind of workouts you like to do.
